Reasons to go organic

Growing up in Nebraska one of the things I looked forward too was Grandma’s house. Partly due to the fresh fruits, vegetables, and meat I could get there. Grandma always had a garden with strawberries and cucumbers among other things.  She canned everything you could think. Although popular amongst family, I was not a fan of minced meat pie. I don’t even know if I’ve ever tried it, just the name turned me off I think.

I even remember having a fresh chicken. I fully understand the meaning of they saying ‘running around like a chicken with its head cut off’. And it is not easy plucking them!

As a rancher, we mostly ate beef at Grandma’s house. Farm fresh beef, pasture feed Angus beef. Most people probably have never had the drag pasture beef that I talk about, but trust me it is so much better than what you get at any store in Florida.

While I’m not crazy about steaks, never was really, I do not eat steaks or corn on the cob in Florida. It just isn’t the same. I haven’t been in Nebraska for quite sometime during harvest season so I haven’t had corn on the come for a while. The corn in Nebraska is sweet just plain. No need for butter to cover up the great taste.

And then the beef. Grass fed beef is so much better than grain fed. Just like South Dakota deer from where my family is from is different than the deer in Nebraska where I grew up. Most of the deer in South Dokota is grass feed where as the deer in Nebraska where I grew up mostly are from the harvested corn fields.   Hard to explain, it’s just different.

So the title is ‘reasons to go organic’ because I recently came across an article reagarding pesticides in fruits.  Here’s the article Reasons to go organic

I’m thinking how fortunate I was to have spent so much time at my Grandmother’s eating a lot of fruits, vegetables, and meats that were organic. Now, it’s much harder to get that same quality item in Florida or any city for that matter. If you’re fortunate enough to have a grocery store that sells high quality organic food, more than likely it is more expensive than the non-organic foods.

After this article I’ll be making a conscience effort to buy high quality organic foods.  But even if I’m able to buy an organic steak at Burns, I will pass as it can never be as good as the South Dakota or Nebraska steaks I’ve come to expect.
