Dr. Martin Luther King Day

The second Monday in January is more than just a day off for some, it’s a celebration for Dr. Martin Luther King and all he did for equality in the United States.  His legacy was built on advancing civil rights using nonviolent civil disobedience based on his Christian beliefs. His power was far reaching social activism during a time of no Twitter, no Facebook, and no 24 hour news programs.

It was Dr. King who stated the dream of non-judgement of all based on skin or religion, but based on their character.  It is this same dream that I hope will one day extend to all people regardless of race or religion.

People go through struggles everyday, but the way they are being handled is much different from Dr King’s way. Hopefully we can move on from gun violence and riots that we’ve seen in Ferguson, Baltimore, and Chicago and learn from Dr King’s way of protesting. Freedom of speech yes, but respect to all humans above all .
